Dance with Rebecca
In last Sunday's dance sessions, students were able to experience both the old and the more contemporary.  The old was the classic Od Lo Ahavti Dai by Naomi Shermer, the same songwriter who created the famous Yerushalyim Shel Zahav.  The newer was the Zodiac, which indeed references the signs of the zodiac and the "fires in the sky" (our stars). It is a fun line dance, disco style where when we turn to the back the back line becomes the front!  Fifth grade enjoyed "Yo Ya," another disco style dance that rotates to face different directions.  Our youngest students got their chance to learn Hava Nagila as others did in previous weeks, as well as Zemir Atik, a classic from the late 50's which our Rabbi refers to as the "pizza dance,"  from the arm positions in the dance.

The previous week the students learned the dance "Tzadik Katamar,"  and "Mechol Halahut."  The former has music by the same person that wrote Niggun Atik (known at SH as the "pizza dance" by Rabbi Eitan), and the words proclaim that a righteous man flourishes like a palm tree and stands tall like a cedar tree, so we all made sure to dance standing tall.  We noted that the word Tzedakah comes from the same root. Adrian, our music director taught the words to Tzadik Katamar to the sixth grade so they could sing it as well!  Then to experience a different type of dance, students practiced Mechol Halahut, a partner line dance also created over 50 years ago that has stood the test of time and is still done all over the world.
